Hope For Our Climate
As our society faces enormous challenges like climate and inequality, hope can be hard to find. Since the birth of the environmental justice movement in the early 1980s, people of faith, like Dollie Burwell and the Rev. Benjamin Chavis, Jr., have generated and inspired hope by successfully taking action with others.
For the second year, our denomination, the United Church of Christ (UCC), is undertaking a nationwide Climate Hope campaign. In 2023, the Climate Hope Cards initiative sought to save thousands of lives, address societal inequities, and get our nation on track to meet its climate goals by collecting over 8,000 petition postcards that urged the Environmental Protection Agency to adopt the strongest possible protections. CSC was proud to support this effort by gathering numerous signatures from our congregation, friends, and neighbors.
For 2024, the UCC has launched a second campaign called Vote for Climate Hope. The first phase of the campaign was an art contest for children and youth. The winning art is now on voter pledge cards that congregations will collect throughout the summer and fall.
As a green church that cares deeply about environmental justice and sustainability, Community Spirit UCC must take concrete actions to align our commitment with our values. One significant way we can do this is by actively participating in this pledge drive and encouraging our members to support initiatives that promote sustainability and care for the environment.
At our Sunday worship services, you will have the opportunity to take as many pledge cards as you want, share them with your friends and neighbors, and then return the completed cards to the Outreach Ministry for processing. If you can’t make it to church but still wish to participate, send an email with your first and last name, and we’ll submit the pledge card for you.
Get ready for a compelling adventure as we journey together!
